Tanworth-in-Arden School is part of a county wide initiative to keep children safe. Protective Behaviours is a practical approach to personal safety. It is a program that encourages self-empowerment and brings with it the skills to raise self-esteem and to help avoid being victimised. This is achieved by teaching children to recognise and trust their intuitive feelings (Early Warning Signs) and to develop strategies for self-protection.

The Protective Behaviours process encourages an adventurous approach to life that satisfies the need for fun and excitement without violence and fear. Every Autumn each child in our school is given four lessons following the 'Taking Care' model. The sessions are around these two key messages: ‘We all have the right to feel safe all the time' and 'There is nothing too awful (or too little) we can't talk about it with someone'.

We also revisit the messages throughout the year and each half term before the holidays the children identify the 5 people on their hand of trust that they can talk to.

Below you will find some direct links to the Protective Behaviours Training Partnership Publications.

WHAT IS THE PREVENT STRATEGY?

Prevent is a government strategy designed to stop people supporting any extreme cause or becoming terrorists or supporting terrorist causes. The Prevent strategy covers all types of terrorism and extremism, including the extreme right wing, violent groups and other causes.

HOW DOES THE PREVENT STRATEGY APPLY TO SCHOOLS?

From July 2015 all schools have a duty to safeguard young people from radicalisation and extremism. This means we have a responsibility to protect young people from extremism and violent views the same way we keep them safe through E-safety or protect them from drugs.

Importantly, we can provide a safe place to discuss these issues so they learn how to protect themselves.

KEY TERMS

Extremism – vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values such as democracy, the rule of law and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.

Ideology – a set of beliefs.

Terrorism – a violent action against people or property, designed to create fear and advance a political, religious or ideological cause.

Radicalisation – the process by which a person comes to support extremism and terrorism.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN AT OUR TANWORTH?

Many of the things we already do at Tanworth-in-Arden CofE Primary School, including the clear teaching of our ethos and values, help our children become positive, happy members of society. Our curriculum and a variety of school activities also contribute to the Prevent strategy. At Tanworth we:

  • Challenge prejudices and any racist comments
  • Learn about a variety of religions through our RE teaching
  • Develop a strong, positive, self-esteem for all pupils
  • Promote the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils
  • Promote British values such as democracy through our school council
  • Safeguard children through the Protective Behaviours teaching
  • Follow a PSHE scheme called Jigsaw across the school

We will also protect young people from the risk of radicalisation, for example by using filters on the internet to make sure they can’t access extremist and terrorist material, or by vetting who comes into school to work with pupils.
