We are absolutely delighted to share the wonderful news that Tanworth-in-Arden Church of England Primary School has been awarded Platinum status by the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme—an exceptional achievement that places us within the top 2% of schools nationally for play provision.

This prestigious recognition reflects our school’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that every child experiences high-quality, inclusive and engaging play opportunities. Over the past two years, we have worked closely with OPAL mentors to transform our outdoor environment and rethink the way we value play within the school day.

What is OPAL?

OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) is a nationally recognised programme that supports schools to improve the quality of their playtime. It is based on extensive research into the importance of play for children’s physical health, emotional wellbeing, social development and creativity.

At Tanworth, we believe that play is not simply ‘free time’—it is an essential part of a child’s development and a key contributor to wellbeing, resilience and happiness.

Our Journey to Platinum

Achieving Platinum status has been a whole-school effort. Key developments have included:

  • Creating a rich and varied outdoor environment with opportunities for imaginative, creative and adventurous play
  • Introducing loose parts play to encourage problem-solving, teamwork and independence
  • Developing all-weather play provision so children can enjoy the outdoors throughout the year
  • Embedding a positive play culture supported by trained staff and Play Leaders
  • Actively listening to pupil voice to shape our provision

The impact has been significant. We have seen:

  • Improved behaviour and engagement during playtimes
  • Increased physical activity and enjoyment for all pupils
  • Stronger friendships and social skills
  • Greater independence, creativity and confidence

A Proud Moment for Our Community

This award is a testament to the dedication of our staff, the enthusiasm of our children, and the support of our wider school community. We are incredibly proud of what has been achieved together.

As a school rooted in our Christian vision of “life in all its fullness”, we see this recognition as an affirmation of our commitment to nurturing the whole child—academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually.

Join Us to Celebrate

We are looking forward to celebrating this fantastic achievement with our community at our upcoming OPAL Platinum Celebration Event. We warmly invite families and friends to join us in recognising this special milestone.
